    A Sparse Stress Model

    Force-directed layout methods constitute the most common approach to draw general graphs. Among them, stress minimization produces layouts of comparatively high quality but also imposes comparatively high computational demands. We propose a speed-up method based on the aggregation of terms in the objective function. It is akin to aggregate repulsion from far-away nodes during spring embedding but transfers the idea from the layout space into a preprocessing phase. An initial experimental study informs a method to select representatives, and subsequent more extensive experiments indicate that our method yields better approximations of minimum-stress layouts in less time than related methods.Comment: Appears in the Proceedings of the 24th International Symposium on Graph Drawing and Network Visualization (GD 2016

    Novel Characteristics of Valveless Pumping

    This study investigates the occurrence of valveless pumping in a fluidfilled system consisting of two open tanks connected by an elastic tube. We show that directional flow can be achieved by introducing a periodic pinching applied at an asymmetrical location along the tube, and that the flow direction depends on the pumping frequency. We propose a relation between wave propagation velocity, tube length, and resonance frequencies associated with shifts in the pumping direction using numerical simulations. The eigenfrequencies of the system are estimated from the linearized system, and we show that these eigenfrequencies constitute the resonance frequencies and the horizontal slope frequencies of the system; 'horizontal slope frequency' being a new concept. A simple model is suggested, explaining the effect of the gravity driven part of the oscillation observed in response to the tank and tube diameter changes.     Project Talent is a large, nationally representative longitudinal study developed by the American Institutes for Research and conducted from 1960 to 1974. The goals were to assess the interests, abilities, and demographics of 9 th –12 th graders and to follow their trajectories into adulthood. More than 1,200 junior and senior high schools participated. Replicate weights were not constructed at the time, preventing the estimation of standard errors. Today, Project Talent is being revived to study the physical, cognitive, economic, and social processes of aging. In this paper, the retrospective construction of 104 sets of student-level replicate weights is described. Partitioning analysis was performed to generate variance strata and variance primary sampling units. The student-level replicate weights were constructed using a jackknife procedure. The process included adjustment of the base year weights and calibration of (full sample and replicate weights) to the total number of secondary school students in the U. S. in the spring of 1960. The use of replicate weights is illustrated by estimating standard errors for means of composite cognitive scores constructed from student questionnaires.     A behavioral comparison of male and female adults with high functioning autism spectrum conditions

    Autism spectrum conditions (ASC) affect more males than females in the general population. However, within ASC it is unclear if there are phenotypic sex differences. Testing for similarities and differences between the sexes is important not only for clinical assessment but also has implications for theories of typical sex differences and of autism. Using cognitive and behavioral measures, we investigated similarities and differences between the sexes in age- and IQ-matched adults with ASC (high-functioning autism or Asperger syndrome). Of the 83 (45 males and 38 females) participants, 62 (33 males and 29 females) met Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) cut-off criteria for autism in childhood and were included in all subsequent analyses. The severity of childhood core autism symptoms did not differ between the sexes. Males and females also did not differ in self-reported empathy, systemizing, anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive traits/symptoms or mentalizing performance. However, adult females with ASC showed more lifetime sensory symptoms (p = 0.036), fewer current socio-communication difficulties (p = 0.001), and more self-reported autistic traits (p = 0.012) than males. In addition, females with ASC who also had developmental language delay had lower current performance IQ than those without developmental language delay (p<0.001), a pattern not seen in males. The absence of typical sex differences in empathizing-systemizing profiles within the autism spectrum confirms a prediction from the extreme male brain theory. Behavioral sex differences within ASC may also reflect different developmental mechanisms between males and females with ASC. We discuss the importance of the superficially better socio-communication ability in adult females with ASC in terms of why females with ASC may more often go under-recognized, and receive their diagnosis later, than males

    Hydration dynamics at fluorinated protein surfaces

    Water-protein interactions dictate many processes crucial to protein function including folding, dynamics, interactions with other biomolecules, and enzymatic catalysis. Here we examine the effect of surface fluorination on water-protein interactions. Modification of designed coiled-coil proteins by incorporation of 5,5,5-trifluoroleucine or (4S)-2-amino-4-methylhexanoic acid enables systematic examination of the effects of side-chain volume and fluorination on solvation dynamics. Using ultrafast fluorescence spectroscopy, we find that fluorinated side chains exert electrostatic drag on neighboring water molecules, slowing water motion at the protein surface

    Deletion of BmoR affects the expression of genes related to thiol/disulfide balance in Bacteroides fragilis

    Bacteroides fragilis, an opportunistic pathogen and commensal bacterium in the gut, is one the most aerotolerant species among strict anaerobes. However, the mechanisms that control gene regulation in response to oxidative stress are not completely understood. In this study, we show that the MarR type regulator, BmoR, regulates the expression of genes involved in the homeostasis of intracellular redox state. Transcriptome analysis showed that absence of BmoR leads to altered expression in total of 167 genes. Sixteen of these genes had a 2-fold or greater change in their expression. Most of these genes are related to LPS biosynthesis and carbohydrates metabolism, but there was a signifcant increase in the expression of genes related to the redox balance inside the cell. A pyridine nucleotide-disulfde oxidoreductase located directly upstream of bmoR was shown to be repressed by direct binding of BmoR to the promoter region. The expression of two other genes, coding for a thiosulphate:quinoneoxidoreductase and a thioredoxin, are indirectly afected by bmoR mutation during oxygen exposure. Phenotypic assays showed that BmoR is important to maintain the thiol/disulfde balance in the cell, confrming its relevance to B. fragilis response to oxidative stress

    Effect of antiandrogen flutamide on measures of hepatic regeneration in rats

    Male rat liver undergoes a process of demasculinization during hepatic regeneration following partial hepatectomy. The possibility that antiandrogens might potentiate this demasculinization process and in so doing augment the hepatic regenerative response was investigated. Adult male Wistar rats were treated with the antiandrogen flutamide (2 mg/rat/day or 5 mg/rat/day subcutaneously) or vehicle for three days prior to and daily after a 70% partial hepatectomy. At various times after hepatectomy, the liver remnants were removed and weighed. Rates of DNA and polyamine synthesis were assessed by measuring thymidine kinase and ornithine decarboxylase activities, respectively. Hepatic estrogen receptor status and the activity of alcohol dehydrogenase, an androgen-sensitive protein, were measured. Prior to surgery, the administration of 5 mg/day flutamide reduced the hepatic cytosolic androgen receptor activity by 98% and hepatic cytosolic estrogen receptor content by 92% compared to that present in vehicle-treated controls. After hepatectomy, however, all differences in sex hormone receptor activity between the treatment groups were abolished. The rate of liver growth after partial hepatectomy in the three groups was identical. Moreover, hepatectomy-induced increases in ornithine decarboxylase activity and thymidine kinase activity were comparable. These data demonstrate that, although flutamide administration initially alters the sex hormone receptor status of the liver, these affects have no effect on the hepatic regenerative response following a partial hepatectomy. © 1989 Plenum Publishing Corporation

    OBJECTIVE: To quantify the concentration of sulfated glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) concentration in the synovial fluid (SF) of knees with chronic anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture and to identify possible associations between GAG concentration in SF and the time elapsed since rupture and degree of chondral injury. METHOD: Fourteen adult male subjects with total unilateral ACL rupture, which had occurred between 5 and 144 months earlier, were assessed. All subjects underwent joint aspiration; it was possible to collect SF from ten individuals. The samples were quantified to determine the GAG concentration using dimethylmethylene blue (DMMB) staining. The degree of chondral injury was macroscopically evaluated using the modified Mankin histological scale. Spearman correlation test (< 0.05) was used to evaluate the association between GAG concentration and chondral injury, and Pearson correlation test (< 0.05) was used to evaluate the association between GAG concentration and the time elapsed since rupture. RESULTS: The GAG concentration in SF showed a mean variation of 73.84 &plusmn; 40.75 ”g/ml, with a mean time of 40.4 &plusmn; 40.3 months since the rupture. There was no correlation between GAG concentration and time since the rupture (r= -0.09, p= 0.81). The chondral injury grades found were 0, 1, 4 and 5. There was no correlation between chondral injury grade and GAG concentration in SF (r= -0.41, p= 0.24). CONCLUSION: After at least 5 months, the GAG concentration in SF from knees with ACL rupture is independent of the time elapsed since rupture and/or the severity of chondral injury.OBJETIVO: Quantificar a concentração de glicosaminoglicanas sulfatadas (GAGs) no lĂ­quido sinovial (LS) de joelhos com ruptura crĂŽnica do ligamento cruzado anterior (LCA) e identificar uma possĂ­vel correlação entre a concentração de GAGs no LS e o tempo pĂłs-ruptura e grau de lesĂŁo condral. MÉTODOS: Foram avaliados 14 indivĂ­duos adultos do sexo masculino com ruptura total unilateral do LCA, ocorrida entre cinco a 144 meses. Todos os sujeitos foram puncionados, sendo possĂ­vel a coleta de LS em dez indivĂ­duos. As amostras foram quantificadas para determinar a concentração de GAGs usando a coloração azul de dimetilmetileno, mĂ©todo descrito por Farndale21. O grau de lesĂŁo condral foi macroscopicamente avaliado pela escala histolĂłgica de Mankin modificada por Messner14. As correlaçÔes entre concentração de GAGs e lesĂŁo condral foram feitas pelo teste de correlação de Sperman (p< 0,05) e a concentração de GAGs e tempo pĂłs-ruptura pelo teste de correlação de Pearson (p< 0,05). RESULTADOS: Concentração de GAGs no LS apresentou variação mĂ©dia de 73,84 &plusmn; 40,75”g/mL, sendo o tempo mĂ©dio pĂłs-ruptura de 40,4 + 40,3 meses. NĂŁo houve correlação entre concentração de GAGs e o tempo pĂłs-ruptura (r= -0,09, p= 0,81). Os graus de lesĂŁo condral encontrados foram de 0, 1, 4 e 5. NĂŁo houve correlação entre grau de lesĂŁo condral e a concentração de GAGs no LS (r= -0,41, p= 0,24). CONCLUSÕES: ApĂłs no mĂ­nimo cinco meses, a concentração de GAGs no LS de joelhos com ruptura do LCA independe do tempo pĂłs-ruptura e/ou do grau de lesĂŁo condral.646

    5D gravity and the discrepant G measurements

    It is shown that 5D Kaluza-Klein theory stabilized by an external bulk scalar field may solve the discrepant laboratory G measurements. This is achieved by an effective coupling between gravitation and the geomagnetic field.
